Little or No Cost Energy-Saving Habits

Postby AtomicPunk on Tue Oct 27, 2009 11:13 am

Here are some simple steps to saving energy; little things you can do to make a big difference.

1. Lower water heater thermostat to 120F

2. Turn off lights when room is not occupied

3. Thermostat setting: winter 68F; summer 78F

4. Use energy-saving settings on washer, dryer, dishwasher, refrigerator; run dishwasher when full and use air dry feature

5. Wash only full loads of clothes in cold water

6. Clean refrigerator condensor coils frequently

7. Repair leaky faucets and toilets

8. Close drapes or blinds during summer days; open during winter to let sun in

9. Caulk around windows and doors to stop air leaks

10. Keep fireplace dampers closed when not in use

Any others?

About the cold water washing. I've noticed that my washer uses a bit of hot water even on the cold setting. It's probably a complete waste of energy because the water might not even get that far from the water heater on the other side of the house. So for good measure, I shut off the hot valve at the washing machine unless I'm actually using it (for special occasions.)

Keep the freezer full if you need freeze water jugs it uses less electricity and in a power outage food will last longer from the added cold.
This next tip will help keep your heating bill down put some water in a pot on your heater the molecules transmit heat it will feel warmer.
Just the opposite to cool a place keep it dry.
Unplug or switch off on a power strip devices that continue to run ghost loads.
Use a clothes line to dry clothes.

Hola!

I got 2 easy ways to save money with an electric hot water heater. It even works if you are a renter!

1) Place an unused sleeping bag around your ELECTRIC hot water heater to insulate your ELECTRIC hot water heater. I had not insulated my ELECTRIC hot water heater, since I was a renter. My suggestion is FREE!

2) Turn off your ELECTRIC hot water heater after showering and it has reheated the cold water. No reason to pay for a timer to be installed on your ELECTRIC hot water heater! Why pay to heat water when you do not need it? Turn it back on before your shower and after your shower!
