Are your cosmetics safe?

Postby greenteadrinker on Sun Sep 07, 2008 7:59 pm

Red flags went up for me while watching "Stuff Happens" on Planet Green the other night. Bill Nye mentioned that there's lead in lipstick (don't wear it-Whew!) but the massive amounts of cosmetics (men and woman) use, and the amounts that are absorbed into our skin is worrisome. Men use after shave, toothpaste,
hair gels too, so it's not all ladies stuff.

[According to the Environmental Working Group, a nonprofit environmental research organization, which conducted an assessment of more than 1,000 cosmetic brands, less than 1 percent are made from ingredients that have all been evaluated for safety. "Some products contain carcinogens, reproductive toxins and other chemicals that may pose health risks," notes the group's Web site].

ONE PERCENT have been tested for safety? :x
They recommend avoiding these....
Butyl acetate Butylated hydroxytoluene Coal tar Cocamide DEA/lauramide DEA
Diazolidinyl urea Ethyl acetate Formaldehyde Parabens (methyl, ethyl, propyl and butyl)
Petrolatum Phthalates Propylene glycol Sodium laureth/sodium laurel sulfate
Talc Toluene Triethanolamine

excellent post!
we started a webstore to sell products that are free from all of those nasties you saw on planet green the other day. our store is called The Simple Body, http://thesimplebody.com and we sell makeup and skin care that is all natural and toxin free! let me know if you get a chance to check it out, we LOVE feedback! we want to add more mens stuff too, (so far we only have a mens spf moisturizer) but its hard to find quality goods. and I'm more experienced with makeup. if you've got suggestions, I'm all ears.

I'm a man, so I don't use cosmetics. But my wife doesn't either. You'd be surprised at how much time and money you can save by cutting back on the paint.

Fortunately, I never got into the habit of wearing makeup so far and I'm 22 years old. It concerns me about the chemicals even in shampoo, soap, etc. and I'm trying to educate myself and find better alternatives. I am starting to really like products at The Body Shop such as their lip gloss and soap (especially Passion Fruit), and I try to find organic and vegan shampoo and conditioner (SLS, paraben free).

But you use shampoo or shaving cream, body lotion, sunscreen? The ingredients are scary.
Awareness-tell a friend.
