XMas Present, any ideas?

Postby vitadellajan on Thu Oct 29, 2009 1:15 am

Hi there, what kind of xmas present will you prepare for your wife/husband? I'm getting some new ideas on choosing a present for my father, can anyone share please?

Consumerism's biggest day. Bah.
But you can do the green thing.
Food garden seeds, rake, hoe, shovel, gardening gloves, worm composter
cfl's
power strips
recycling containers for newspapers, glass, cans, plastics
batts of insulation (with the offer to install it in their home)
handmade Christmas card made from recycled paper
8)

In addition to GTD's great suggestions...

a french press coffee maker

a tea kettle (more efficient to boil water in a kettle, than an open pot)

shade-grown, fair trade coffee

Yerba Mate' teas (I love the orange flavor green tea)

A reusable waterbottle or coffee mug

A kill-a-watt energy meter

organic cotton bath towels
FMHOA. Seriously.

How about a donation to a green charitable organization such as the autobaun or sierra club.

Or any charitable organization such as

I am glad you added this. I find that sometimes these kinds of gifts aren't universally appreciated, but oh well. Sometimes I think the people who don't appreciate this kind of gift probably need the good karma done on their bahalf anyways.

for a father... just figure out what tool(s) he doesn't yet have, then go out and buy the best quality tool out there. Don't bother getting less than the best quality in order to afford a greater quantity of tools though, he'll treasure the best quality drill bit over a whole tool set of lesser quality.

Nothing, or at least nothing commercial. A nice dinner is always good. I told my family several years ago that I was no longer interested in trading gifts on xmas or birthdays. Initially this was a bit difficult, but today some family members are starting to do the same thing. While there are some nice green gifts, we probably shouldn't be celebrating overconsumption. If someone needs a reusable water bottle, for example, and you want to be nice, feel free to buy it for them today, it doesn't have to be xmas or their birthday. :)

Thank you very much but you forgot to suggest Green Tea.

"Need" may not be the present they are looking for,(verses want they may "want") but I try to buy my friends/family things they need and won't/can't indulge in (without going too high)
and I always make handmade cards using recycled paper (I make my own in a press)
for that personal touch.
:D
